Uilleann Pipe Middle and Big Drone Tuning This sound sample shows the middle and big drones' Ds being tuned against the D of the small drone. I chose this as a beginner's example because it is easiest for me to hear the tuning change when the small drone is used as a reference. Other players may have different preferences. Notice the ringing or vibrating nature of the sound at first. As the small drone is brought into tune, the vibration slows to a pulsing or "wa-wa" sort of tone. When the tuning is exact, this vibration stops entirely and all sensation of movement ceases. It is easier to tune drones to one another than to the chanter because the main pitches are lower, the musical notes are the same, the tones are more similar, and the vibration effect of mis-tuning is more prominent. Also, since each drone only plays one note, the drones can be set exactly in tune with one another. There is no compromising to learn. End of uilleann pipe middle and big drone tuning.
