Old Style 5-beat Rolls From the stereo LP record "Scots Guards Pipes & Drums," Angel 1950. The instruments include low pitched chanters and hide-headed rope- tensioned side (snare) drums. This is the old-style quick-march rolloff. There is no "attack" other than the initial startup, nor are the chanter E's brought in together. Most contemporary players regard this form of startup as laughable, but on purely musical terms it is very dramatic. It remains very effective with audiences unfamiliar with modern contest requirements.
